Definition

Contraction / Short Forms merupakan bentuk lisan dan tulis (dalam kondisi nonformal /informal writing/speaking) yang dibuat menjadi ringkas dari kata atau satu set kata-kata dalam bahasa Inggris yang sering kita sebut sebagai singkatan.
Untuk membentuk contraction/short forms, letakkan tanda baca apostrof (apostrophe) (‘) pada posisi huruf yang dihilangkan.

Contraction/Short Forms with I/he/she/it/you/they/we

Contoh kalimat:

I’ve got some new clothes.
We’ll probably go out this evening.
It’s 10 o’clock. You’re late again.

‘s → is or has

‘s → is

She’s going out this evening. (she is going → she’s going)

‘s → has

She’s gone out. (she has gone out → she’s gone)

‘d → would or had

‘d → would

A: What would you like to eat?

B: I’d like a salad, please. (I’d like → I would like)

‘d → had

I told the police that I’d lost my passport. (I’d lost → I had lost)

Jangan gunakan ‘m/’s/’d etc. pada akhir kalimat.

Are you tired? – Yes I am. (not ‘Yes, I’m)

Penggunaan lain

Who’s your favourite football player? (= Who is)
What’s the time? (= What is)
There’s a big tree in the garden. (= There is)
My sister’s working in Paris. (= My sister is working)
Emily’s gone out. (= Emily has gone)
What colour’s your car? (= What colour is your car?)

Negative Contraction

is, are, was, were
– isn’t = is not
– aren’t = are not
– wasn’t = was not
– weren’t = were not
– has, have, had
– hasn’t = has not
– haven’t = have not
– hadn’t = had not

do, does, did
– don’t = do not
– doesn’t = does not
– didn’t = did not

can, could, will, would, should, must, need
– can’t = cannot
– couldn’t = could not
– won’t = will not
– shouldn’t = should not
– mustn’t = must not
– needn’t = need not
