Pengertian

Complement (pelengkap) adalah kata atau kelompok kata yang berfungsi untuk melengkapi makna subject, verb, atau object.

Macam

Ada tiga macam complement, berikut masing-masing penjelasannya.

Subject Complement

Subject Complement merupakan noun, pronoun, adjective, atau bentuk lainnya yang dapat berfungsi sebagai noun atau adjective yang mengikuti linking verb dan memberikan deskripsi atau menerangkan subjek dari sebuah kalimat.

  • Linking verb asli

segala bentuk be (am, is, are, was, were, has been, are being, might have been, etc.), become, dan seem

  • Linking verb

appear, feel, grow, look, prove, remain, smell, sound, taste, and turn.

contoh kalimat :

Mr. Clark is a teacher.

Mr. Clark : subject

is : verb (linking verb)

a teacher : noun (subject complement)

(Disini a teacher menerangkan subject Mr. Clark)

Verb Complement

Verb Complement merupakan direct object, atau direct dan indirect object dari suatu verb.  Direct object, atau direct dan indirect object tersebut dapat berupa noun, pronoun, atau bentuk lain seperti gerund, to infinitive, dan noun clause.

contoh:

  • Direct object

I love swimming.

swimming merupakan gerund yang berfungsi sebagai direct object

  • Direct dan Indirect object

My friend gives me a cake.

me merupakan pronoun yang berfungsi sebagai indirect object

a cake merupakan noun yang berfungsi sebagai direct object

Object Complement

Object Complement merupakan noun, pronoun, adjective, atau bentuk lain yang berfungsi sebagai noun atau adjective dan menerangkan, mendeskripsikan, atau merujuk kepada direct object.

Object Complement hanya muncul pada transitive verb (kata kerja yang membutuhkan objek)

contoh:

  • Emily makes Ethan angry.

Ethan : direct object

angry : object complement

Exercise 1

Manakah yang merupakan complement dari kalimat-kalimat di bawah ini.

1. Nobody called her pretty.

2. I found the exam difficult.

3. That girl is very beautiful.

4. My hobby is cycling.

5. This is yours.

6. The fried rice tasted delicious.

7. I find the question easy.

8. I love cycling.

9. His dream is to win the competition.

10. Mr. Clark was a great policeman.


 

Exercise 2

Tentukan apakah kata/frasa/klausa yang digarisbawahi merupakan subject, verb, atau object complement.

1. I like jogging.

2. Ethan has decided to stop smoking.

3. She looks pale.

4. My friend lends me ten dollars.

5. I call her mommy.

6. He seems happy after the exam.

7. This is mine.

8. I hate waiting.

9. The plan sounds interesting.

10. Clark makes Emily happy.
