Pengertian

Correlative conjunction atau konjungsi berpasangan merupakan kata hubung yang berpasangan yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua kata, dua frasa, atau dua klausa.

Kata, frasa, atau klausa yang dihubungkan haruslah sejajar atau memiliki struktur gramatikal yang sama, contohnya

• kata benda (noun) harus dipasangkan dengan kata benda (noun)
• kata kerja (verb) harus dipasangkan dengan kata kerja (verb)
• kata sifat (adjective) harus dipasangkan dengan kata sifat (adjective)
• dst.

Correlative conjunction juga memiliki sebutan lain, yaitu paired conjunction

Penggunaan

Berikut ini merupakan penggunaan dari correlative conjunction: both … and; not only … but also; either … or; neither … nor.

both … and

both … and (baik … maupun …) ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah subject maka verb yang mengikuti harus dalam bentuk plural.

contoh:

• Both my sister and my brother        are        here.
           subject             subject       plural verb

• Both my sister and my brother        go         to the zoo.
            subject              subject      plural verb

not only … but also

not only … but also (tidak hanya … tetapi juga … ) ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah subject maka verb yang mengikuti ditentukan oleh subject yang paling akhir/subject yang paling dekat dengan verb.

contoh:

• Not only my sister but also my parents      are        here.
                 subject                   subject      plural verb
• Not only my sister but also my parents        go         to the zoo.
                 subject                    subject      plural verb

Ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah kata atau frasa atau klausa, maka kedua kata, frasa, atau klausa tersebut harus setara.

contoh:

• Yesterday it not only rained but also snowed.
  → kedua verb dalam tenses yang sama, dengan struktur yang setara.

either … or

either … or  ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah subject maka verb yang mengikuti ditentukan oleh subject yang paling akhir/subject yang paling dekat dengan verb.

contoh:

• Either physics or chemistry   is going to be my subject.
             subject        subject         plural verb

Ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah kata atau frasa atau klausa, maka kedua kata, frasa, atau klausa tersebut harus setara.

contoh:

• I will take either chemistry or physics next semester.
  → keduanya merupakan noun

neither … nor

neither … nor  ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah subject maka verb yang mengikuti ditentukan oleh subject yang paling akhir/subject yang paling dekat dengan verb.

contoh:

• Neither  my sister  nor  my parents       are        here.
                 subject               subject      plural verb

Ketika digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua buah kata atau frasa atau klausa, maka kedua kata, frasa, atau klausa tersebut harus setara.

contoh:

• That book is neither interesting nor accurate.
  → keduanya merupakan adjective
