Definisi

Beberapa kata kerja dapat terdiri dari dua bagian kata kerja. Beberapa kata kerja tersebut terdiri dari sebuah verb dan sebuah particle.

Beberapa kata kerja inilah yang disebut dengan Phrasal Verbs.

Particle yang dimaksud dalam phrasal verbs adalah in/out/up/down/away or off/back/over/round.

Phrasal verb membentuk makna baru untuk masing-masing gabungan kata.

contoh:

• got + in

contoh dalam kalimat:

• Emily opened the door of the car and got in.

→ got in bisa bermakna (into the car)

Jadi, phrasal verbs adalah

a verb (go/look/be/etc)  + in/out/up/down/away or off/back/over/round

a verb + in

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + in yang memiliki makna ‘masuk’

Contoh:

• Emily opened the door of the car and got in.
• I waited outside the house. I didn’t go in.

a verb + out

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + out yang memiliki makna ‘keluar/ ke luar’

Contoh:

• The car stopped and the woman got out.
• I went to the window and looked out.

a verb + on

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + on yang memiliki makna ‘naik ke atas sesuatu/ke atas permukaan sesuatu’

Contoh:

• The bus arrived and got on.

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + off yang memiliki makna ‘ke bawah dari atas sesuatu’

Contoh:

• Be careful! Don’t fall off from your bicycle.

a verb + up

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + up yang memiliki makna ‘ke atas’ ⬆️

Contoh:

• He stood up and left the room.
• I usually get up early.
• We looked up at the stars.

a verb + down

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + down yang memiliki makna ‘ke bawah’ ⬇️

Contoh:

• Would you like to sit down?
• The picture fell down.

a verb + away/off

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + away/off yang memiliki makna ‘dari satu tempat menuju ke tempat lain’ ( •⟶ )

Contoh:

• The thief ran away. (or … ran off)
• Clark got into the car and drove away (or … drove off)

be/go away (in/to another place)

• Cathy has gone away for a few days.

a verb + back

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + back yang memiliki makna ‘kembali dari’ ( → go,  ← back )

Contoh:

• We went out for dinner and then went back to our hotel.
• Go away and don’t come back!

be back:

• Emily is away. She’ll be back on Monday.

a verb + over

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + over yang memiliki makna ‘lewat/melewati’   ⤽

Contoh:

• • The wall wasn’t very high, so we climbed over.
  • Turn over and look at the next page.

a verb + round/around

Berikut ini merupakan contoh dari phrasal verb a verb + round(or around) yang memiliki makna   ⟳

Contoh:

• Somebody shouted my name, so I looked round (or around).
• We went for a long walk. After six miles we turned round (or around) and went back.
