Part of Speech: Part 1 (Major Word Classes)

Definisi

Part of speech adalah word class atau kelas kata, dimana kata-kata dibagi menurut penggunaannya. Contoh: Preposition, Conjuction, Pronouns, Determiners, dan Interjections.

Macam

Preposition

Preposisi menggambarkan hubungan antara kata-kata dari kelas kata utama. Preposisi yang umum digunakan seperti about, across, above, after, as, at, before, behind, below, by, during, for, in, on, out, over, up, until, with, because of, instead of, due to, such as etc.

Contoh dalam kalimat:

  • It was difficult to sleep during the light.
  • They were unable to attend the meeting because of the bad weather in Ireland.

Conjunction

Conjunction merupakan kata penghubung yang terdapat dalam kalimat. Conjunction dibagi menjadi 3 macam, seperti dijelaskan dibawah ini:

  • Coordinating conjunctions

Terdiri dari FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), dan dapat menghubungkan kata dengan kata, klausa dengan kalusa, atau frasa dengan frasa, kalimat dengan kalimat, prefix dengan prefix.

Contoh: The exam was so difficult, yet my friends and I have passed it.

(Diatas, conjunction yet menghubungkan klausa, sementara conjunction and menghubungkan kata)

  • Subordinating conjunctions

Terdiri dari although, unless, after, before, since, if, etc

After we had talked on the phone, I wrote down what we had decided.

Everyone enjoyed fishing trip although no one caught any fish.

(Diatas, conjunctions after dan although menghubungkan dua independent clause)

  • Two-word conjunctions

Beberapa conjuction terdiri dari lebih dari bagian.

contohnya: either … or …, neither … nor …, but … also …

You can drink chocolate milk either hot in the winter or cold in the summer.

Pronouns

Pronouns merupakan kata ganti. Berikut adalah tipe pronouns dan contohnya.

Interrogative whose, who, which, what

Determiners

Determiners biasanya terletak sebul kata benda dan menunjukkan kata benda apa yang mengikuti.Contoh: a/an, the, my, his, some, this, both, twenty, each, any,

Berikut merupakan tipe Determiners

  • Articles: a/an, the
  • Demonstratives: this, that, these, those
  • Possessives: my, your, his, her, its, our, their, x’s (possessive ’s)
  • Quantifiers: (a) few, fewer, (a) little, many, much, more, most, some, any, etc.
  • Numbers: one, two, three, etc.

Contoh

I need some paper for my printer.

Have you got a ruler I can borrow?

Your book is on the sofa.

Interjections

Interjections biasa diakhiri dengan tanda seru yang mengambarkan reaksi seseorang ketika sesuatu terjadi.

Contoh: ah! Ouch! Gosh! Wow! Oh!

Yippee! Tomorrow is weekend.

Wow! That is a beutiful scenery.
