Definisi

Simple Past Tense adalah bentuk kalimat yang mengindikasikan bahwa sebuah kegiatan dimulai dan berakhir pada masa lampau pada waktu tertentu.

Fungsi

Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk menceritakan kejadian pada masa lalu yang terjadi pada waktu tertentu.

Keterangan Waktu

Keterangan waktu yang biasanya digunakan adalah ago, yesterday, last week, last month, last year, two days ago. Pada simple past tense, keterangan waktu ini dituliskan secara spesifik. Berikut adalah penjelasan dalam bentuk video  

Rumus

Ada dua macam bentuk kalimat, yaitu kalimat verbal (menggunakan kata kerja) dan kalimat nominal (bukan menggunakan kata kerja).  Keduanya memiliki rumus berbeda.

Subject + verb 2 + Complement Subject: I, you, we, they, she, he, it Verb 2 untuk semua subject (I, you, they, we, he, she, it)

Dalam Simple Past Tense kata kerja yang digunakan adalah kata kerja bentuk kedua. Untuk kalimat verbal, terdapat dua jenis kata kerja atau verb, yakni:
  • regular verb, dan
  • irregular verb

Regular Verb

Kata kerja kedua dibentuk dari verb 1 + ed / d

  • I played football yesterday.

Irregular Verb

Kata kerja kedua pada irregular verb berbeda bentuknya dengan kata kerja pertamanya. Oleh karenanya, untuk menguasai irregular verb, kamu harus menghafalkan kata kerja tersebut.

Rumus Simple Past Tense Kalimat Nominal

Subject + was / were + Complement Subject : I, you, they, we, he she, it was → untuk subjek I, she, he, it were → untuk subjek you, they, we, I* * = were berpasangan dengan I hanya ketika dalam conditional sentence yang menyatakan ketidakmungkinan.

Ciri utama adalah menggunakan was / were diikuti dengan not Subject + was / were + not + Complement Subject : I, you, they, we, he she, it was → untuk subjek I, she, he, it were → untuk subjek you, they, we, I* * = were berpasangan dengan I hanya ketika dalam conditional sentence yang menyatakan ketidakmungkinan.

Interogatif : Verbal

Yes/No Question

Untuk pertanyaan dengan jawaban ya/tidak, cukup letakkan did di awal kalimat. Did + subject + Verb 1 + complement Subject: I, you, we, they, she, he, it did :  untuk semua subject (I, you, they, we, she, he, it)

W/H Question

Pertanyaan menggunakan What, Who, Where, When, Why, How, tambahkan did di belakangnya. W/H   + did   + subject   + Verb 1 +  complement W/H : What, Who, Where, When, Why, How Subject : I, you, they, we, she he, it did :  untuk semua subject (I, you, they, we, she, he, it)
Interogatif : Verbal

Yes/No Question

Untuk pertanyaan dengan jawaban ya/tidak, cukup letakkan was / were di awal kalimat. Verbal

Ingat rumus, kalimat verbal menggunakan kata kerja kedua baik regular maupun irregular. Perhatikan penggunaan kata kerja bentuk kedua dan keterangan waktunya dalam kalimat di bawah ini.
  • They played volleyball yesterday.
  • Cathy stayed at my house last week.
  • Emily took a picture last night.
  • We went to market two days ago.
  • I ate an apple yesterday.

Nominal

Ingat rumus, kalimat nominal tidak menggunakan kata kerja, tetapi menggunakan to be: was, were. Perhatikan penggunaan to be di bawah ini.
  • I was angry.
  • She was hungry.
  • He was late.
  • They were tired.
  • We were hungry.

Positif

Kalimatnya tidak mengandung kata not
  • They came to my house yesterday.
  • Emily drew a picture last night.
  • My brother and I bought some books yesterday.
  • I was tired yesterday.
  • We were hungry last night.

Negatif

Kalimatnya mengandung kata not, dan perhatikan jika not bisa disingkat.
  • I didn’t go to school yesterday.
  • She didn’t walk to market two days ago.
  • They didn’t play football yesterday.
  • He wasn’t hungry last night.
  • We weren’t tired yesterday.

Interogatif

Penggunaan dalam kalimat tanya. Perhatikan penggunaan did dan to be: was/were
  • Did you come to my house last night?
  • Did you walk to market yesterday?
  • What did she buy last week?
  • Where did you go last month?
  • Were you tired yesterday?
  • Was your brother hungry last night?
  • Where was your book?
  • Who were they?
